Godflesh is probably my favorite band that I haven't seen live. Unfortunately, it looks like I will never get the chance to change that, as Justin Broadrick announced today that he is permanently retiring the band as a touring entity. The reason, he explained in a recent Instagram post, is that he recently required a fairly serious abdominal surgery, and he doesn't believe that he can perform the band's intense vocal style any longer without the risk of serious damage to his abdominal wall.
The good news is that more Godflesh albums are on the way, and Justin Broadrick believes that his more melodic projects like Jesu can continue as live bands. So, while I've missed my chance to see Godflesh, hopefully I still have a shot to see one of his other bands live.
This news also serves as a great reminder to incorporate some abdominal training into your routine. While most of us aren't delivering brutal metal vocals, most of us aren't focusing enough on our core strength, either. Below is a quick follow-along workout that can be performed daily to build some abdominal strength, which helps protect from injury.
Here's wishing Justin a speedy and simple recovery!
