BOTH KINDS OF HEAVY

One of the first things I do every Friday morning is check the new release lists on some music sites. Some weeks, I find a treasure trove, with far more albums I want to check out in a day. Sometimes there are a handful. And other weeks... well, there's not much. This is one of those weeks that there simply aren't any albums that are really grabbing me. Fortunately, there are still a few singles that captured my attention this morning.
Up first is Author and Punisher. There aren't many bands that have a completely unique hook, but A&P is one of them. If you're not familiar, it's a one-band band from artist and mechanical engineer Tristan Shone. There are zero traditional instruments on A&P tracks - all sounds are created by Shone's custom-built machines. The first few albums were very heavy and noisy, and while the first few tracks from the upcoming album are definitely heavy, his music has become more melodic and approachable in recent years. Author and Punisher are touring this fall, and I firmly believe everyone should see him live at least once.
Up next is a new live track from Mono. I have been completely obsessed with Mono since seeing them open for Alcest a few months back. The live version of Oath from their last studio album is gorgeous. I don't typically love live albums as the vocals usually fall flat for me, but that's not going to be an issue for the instrumental Mono. I expect this is going to get a lot of play from me when it releases later this year.
Finally, here's a new single from the post-metal band Blackshape. I have a couple friend who have seen these folks live in the last few months, and all have said they absolutely crushed live. Their previous album was primarily instrumental, but this new track features some lovely vocals. I'm excited to hear what the rest of this album holds.

New Small Animal Hospital (Minneapolis noise) is excellent. The new Town Portal single is also very promising.
