Here are a couple of albums that are working for me this week, one from earlier this year and one released today. Read on for more!

I trust that you're a very clever person, reader, and deduced that my first pick is the album Spinner by the Danish band EYES. They say that you stop discovering new music around 30, and the assumption is that we all mellow out with age. And yet here I am in my late 40s discovering a love of grindcore! I becaeme aware of this album thanks to the fine folks at TrebleZine, which is the finest source of music news and reviews online as far as I'm concerned. They call it a metalcore/noise album. However you classify it, it is 23 minutes of blistering rage that's simultaneously hook-laden and full of interesting little musical surprises. Check out the video of the single above, and don't let the deceptive opening track through you off.

Up next is a new release today, Then The Darkness by Grayceon. Grayceon is a "nexus band" for me in that they're related to more than one band in my list of all-time favorites. Vocalist/cellist Jackie Perez Gratz is also a member of Giant Squid, a band I am completely obsessed with. She's also played with Amber Asylum, who got a lot of play from me back in my more gothic days, and guested on albums from other bands I love, like Harvestman, Khorada, and King Woman. The big one is her work with my number one band of all time, Neurosis - among others, she performed on the band's masterful Times of Grace.

So yeah, I'm gonna check out anything she does, and Grayceon's recent work for me clicks in a big way. I've only spent a little time with the new album so far (I mean, it only came out today!), but I already know it is going to get a lot more play from me. Then The Darkness isn't particularly heavy, although it does still pack plenty of riffs. If you like your metal with a little more beauty and grandeur, this is one for you.
