About a week ago, I was perusing Reddit at night when I came across a post by the band onlytime about their new EP. In the post description, the band mentioned that they're based in Minneapolis and dropped Isis and Blood Incantation as influences for the new music. That was more than enough to get me to check it out, and I was really impressed with the two epic tracks. I wanted to learn more, so I reached out for quick interview with the band. Read our conversation and listen to the embedded EP below.
Who is in your band and how long have you been around?
onlytime is myself (Jason), Taylor, and Tom. We started jamming in 2023 and put out our debut EP "Compassion Fatigue" in July of 2024.
Who would you call your major influences?
There are some through-line bands like Isis, Converge, and Botch that we all love and play an influential role for us. But we also have fairly broad collective taste, so the van playlist can have anything from Nine Inch Nails, to Phoebe Bridgers, to Low.
Can you tell us a little bit about what inspired the new EP?
When we started the band we wanted to challenge ourselves with if we could do things that were pretty and quiet, in addition to doing things that were loud and dissonant. So musically this is a further extension of that idea. We wrote this through the winter of 2025 and early 2026, so lyrically things shifted from very personal into more external with the ICE occupation in Minneapolis. "Nothingless" for example started as a longing and romantic song about distance, but took a turn when we reframed it as a song from Becca Good to Renee Good.
How would you describe the heavy music scene in Minneapolis right now?
In a word: vast. Truly we have some incredible bands from here that show an extraordinary range within the genre. I could name a bunch of bands from Minneapolis I'm excited about but I'll give you three: Melpomene (brain-melting math-metal), BODY (chainsaw hardcore), and Vin (prog-screamo).
Do you have any shows coming up?
Yes! We're playing 10/20 @ 7th Street Entry, and we have a quick run of shows with Melpomene starting 12/17 @ Zhora Darling in Minneapolis.
What's next for onlytime?
Writing more songs and doing some more regional touring in 2027.
Who in the band has the most interest in fitness?
Probably me.
What's your preferred exercise/routine?
Running and riding my bike. Mostly enough cardio that I don't get winded when we play live.
